I was enrolled in school to become a vet tech but then my financial aid fell through so I ended up not moving away to school, I had to find a new job to support myself here (since I already quit my old job in anticipation of moving away to college, btw: I’m 19 and I haven’t lived with my parents since I was 14, so I’m used to having to support myself by working as a housekeeper, nanny, other odd jobs). I found a job as an intern in a grooming salon, I already know how to groom a dog (I was raised on an animal rescue and have worked/volunteered for the humane society since I was a little girl), however training is standard for all new employees. I’m really liking my new job however it’s different for me to work with dogs (I usually worked with livestock and exotic pets on my father’s animal rescue) and it’s also different for me to work with animals that aren’t homeless.

I’m looking for advice on grooming?
advice on talking to the dog owners?
advice on which grooming tools are best?
oh, btw, this is the site from which I will be purchasing my grooming supplies, do any of you have personal experiences with this site you’d be willing to share? positive or negative.

I’m sorry my sleep deprived mind is giving me grief tonight:
the question should be worded “have” not “has”
and I did not mean to post the above details twice
please bare with me if I confuse any of you with these mistakes, and thank you for your responses in advance
thank you,
yes I’m enrolling in courses through PennFoster as soon as I get myself settled with a more reliable laptop

I have trained numerous dogs in the past mostly for hunt tests. These were mostly my own dogs. Now I am thinking about doing it “professionally”. I have a good job that I do not want to five up. But I would like to try dog training on the side. Where should I start? Classes, books, etc. Any other advice? I am in VT. thanks.

We have a female who is 4 months old. She is very alert and does let us know if ANYTHING is moving. She is already housebroken and knows how to “sit”. So I know she is smart but I would just like to get some advice from someone who perhaps has skills in training a Dobie for personal protection. I dont want an agressive dog but I do want a dog who is going to not allow someone into our home. My children and I are alone at night alot due to hubbys work hours.

Okay I live in middle Tn and I’m looking into getting into a dog related career. But need advice

Career 1

Dog Trainer:
What does it take to become a dog trainer. I tried with Petco and Petsmart but you have to be a regular retail employee for atleast 3 months before they will even consider you to be a trainer and that is only if a spot comes open for a trainer

What kind of classes or certification would I need and is there like a place that you can get on with that you can do dog training.

Career 2

Dog Groomer

What do I need to know to become one. Do I go through a class or do i get on the job training. What qualification would I need.

I’m 22 years old and late in the game. I finally know what I want to do and that is either train or groom and need to get into it pretty fast. After all I have to help support the family (my husband can’t be expected to do it all)

So how do I get into it.

Thanks

Also I have 2 dogs and one is a poodle and I’m just now starting to groom him myself

Yeah I need to bring in some income we have school loans to pay off you can’t support your family by working at a rescue or shelter. that is all volunteer.

i’ve heard many times that training your dog with German commands is better and easier for the dog. some people claim that the intonation and pronunciation of German is somehow easier for dogs to “get”. is this true? i have a beautiful pitbull girl, who’s very sweet and an overall very good dog. she’s been acting up lately, chewed up a pillow, not coming when i call and not dropping her toy when i tell her too. any videos or websites anybody recommends? all genuine good advice is welcome and appreciated. thanx in advance!
thank you sooo much guys, i’ve got mixed responses but overall says german is better. i’ll try some tips you guys gave. if not, german it is. thanks again! wunderbar!

I had to buy my one year old lab mix a crate yesterday because she will not stop tearing up the furniture, not matter how many new toys I get her. Can anyone please give me advice on how to properly train her in it? I feel kinda guilty leaving her in it but I’ve heard that its actually really good for a dog. She would only be in there until we get home from work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am working on training my puppy and I have read that hand signals are more accurate. How exactly does it register to them? How do you train them to respond to hand signals? Any advice would be great!

I would like to train one of my dogs to be service dog, but I’m not a disabled person, nor am I a licensed trainer. This would be a nice hobby for me, and I think a neat set of skills for my dog to learn.

One thing I have come across in my research is that it’s illegal to label your dog as a service dog if you are not disabled under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Does this also apply to a dog that has a “Service Dog in Training” patch? Are there legal ramifications to teaching my dogs such skills (this means bringing into public places, etc.). I don’t want to step on any legal toes, but I also want my dog to be trained in that manner.

Advice?
Well so much for that idea– there are no local service dog training facilities in my area, and because I live in a small isolated island town, I don’t think they’ll spend the money to ship a dog to me to be trained.

Perhaps I’ll train for therapy instead.
