Guard dog training advice needed?
Filed Under Dog Training | 5 Comments
I want a dog that is a good family dog but can also be protective of my family/house. Ive looked into some of the more common guard dog breeds but then a new thought occured to me. We already have a 2 year old male chocolate lab who shows some signs of being protective. He sometimes barks when people knock at the door or enter the house and he barks and growls when people are in the/his yard. My question is what are ways that i can encourage these protective type behaviors? I certainly dont’ want to create a dangerous dog. But are there safe ways of teaching him some of this stuff without paying a fortune sending him to some protection dog school? thanks for the help

My mom does not want a dog or cat, and i really love animals. I want to be a vet when i grow up. I would like to get involved in fostering and training dogs that i can keep for a while and then give them to someone in need. I already volenteer at my local shelter with kittens, but i am not old enough to walk the dogs at the shelter. My mom said she would train a dog or foster one. How do i get involved? I also worry about the kill shelters…it is not fair to the puppies! I would take all of them if they would not kill them. I live in NY fyi. How do i help them out and train them or foster them? Feel free to contact me if you want to. Thanks so much for the help and have a great day!

What are the basics of dog training? Rescue dog with training already? please read whole question?
Filed Under Dog Training | 1 Comment
I want to get a dog from the Humane Society and will opt towards an easily trainable dog and/or one who is already trained. If he is already trained, what will I personally have to do to so he responds to me? Also, what exactly are the things I would train him? Basically, if he listens to me and can understand the commands, he will be able to understand most of what I want him to do, right?

What’s the best way to have an infant and a devoted, attentive, loving dog? Breeds, training and advice?
Filed Under Dog Training | 7 Comments
This is basically a theoretical, planning-ahead sort of question. I don’t have a spouse, a house and can’t get another dog at the moment.
But many people on here and elsewhere say that having a dog when you have an infant isn’t a good idea. I agree, but I also see so many stories about babies growing up with wonderful, protective dogs.
If I ever have a kid, I definitely want a dog that is so devoted and so protective of him. The kind you read stories about… shielding the kid from the fall-off of the balcony, protecting the baby from rattlesnakes, that babies learn to walk holding on to…
So… if you wanted a dog like this and didn’t have a kid yet, what would be your strategy?
I realize having a baby and puppy at the same time isn’t a good idea. But if you get a dog a year or two before the baby… What breeds would you think are the best choices for infants? What kind of training would you do before the baby came (like, before the baby was even created)?
If you’re giving suggestions for breeds, I prefer rarer breeds. Just a personal preference, but I’d be more interested in breeds that aren’t in the top 10 or even top 20 or 30 maybe.
A few breeds I’ve thought might be a good fit include Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and American Foxhounds. But I haven’t done extensive research. These are just two breeds I’ve come across in my reading that seem like good fits.
